(Revision of previous book) Free Printable Interactive BookCan you believe it----SEVEN years ago, I posted an interactive book on this blog---"Bears Like.....".
A few thousand of you have enjoyed it, and some of you may have even printed it. It's a great book for early readers or for early communicators. It fits nicely with a unit about bears and I hope someone actually used it in their work with children. I've completely revised it, so the old links don't work.
Since original publication, the image rights in the original book have changed, and I've been switching from using Boardmaker symbols to Smarty Symbols. I love Boardmaker, but no longer have it, but do have a commercial license for Smarty Symbols. All of the pictures in this current version of "Bears Like..." are either Pixabay (public domain) or Photos for Class.
Thinking of those very cold people up north, I took a look at this book (that I had posted in 2014) and changed it to a pdf file, and used a different font. Otherwise, it still looks appropriate for the kids and season. It's great for many targets.

Enjoy (again!) No snow here in NC, and the temps on Monday will go down to a balmy 19 degrees.
I won't need to trudge off to school, though. #retired
2014 blog below

Happy Winter, Everyone! I hope this post finds all of my school SLP buddies well-rested, and searching for materials to start off the new year!

flickr

I've made a new interactive book---Verbs of Winter. This is posted (by me) on Tarheel Reader, and downloaded to Google Drive, with some icons added to make it a bit interactive. This is a nice book for Verbs, Pronouns, Simple Sentences, and Literacy.

See for yourself and download for your class.

flickr

Kids can use the icons to select the correct pronoun, and then use the pronoun and verb icons as a simple cue to produce a sentence to describe the pictures. Each picture features a different verb.

The ending is a surprise, and will help to be a springboard for a discussion about seasons, bears, and hibernation.
I love Valentine's Day in school, even if I personally don't make a big deal over it at home. For language therapy purposes, the day lends itself to communication, and creative materials can be used to have fun and learn.

Here's a book ("The Valentine Animals") I made using 'Photos for Class' (public domain), 'Pixabay' (public domain), and Smarty Symbols (I have and paid for a professional license). The theme is animals, and each page has a simple repetitive sentence.
Pictures are cute, and the kids can match icons to photos. I put some comments in there, because not all the animals look particularly happy about posing! I'd like to know what that pony thinks! Read the book to see the pony, ha ha.

There is a sentence frame at the end. Use it for all pages but the last.

I think that both the kids and adults will enjoy the pictures. You can laminate it (or not), cut out the pictures and have the kids match and read.
The day lends itself to fun, crafts, giving, thinking of friends, and hugs.

To help celebrate this time of year and keep the kids motivated, I've created a new 40 page packet. It's perfect for speech and special education collaboration, consisting of two interactive books and a craftivity. Extension activities are provided, along with numerous visuals such as craft communication board, sequencing worksheet, and a core-36 board. Photos are public domain from Pixabay.com, while clip art is from Smarty Symbols (copyrighted).
I've been on a bit of a hiatus from creating materials lately, but an SLP party and 'yankee swap' prompted me to suddenly create this Valentine's Day packet. I gave it out free to my Chapel Hill colleagues, and have posted it at a modest price on TPT. If you are a starving CF, however, or are affected in a negative way by the unfortunate government shutdown (don't get me started on this, I'm a Democrat), email me at speech40@gmail.com, and the product is yours. No questions asked.
Here's a snippet from my own life. My youngest granddaughter turned one yesterday. She's really growing fast, and we all adore her.
It has been a huge hit, and when I was working in the schools, my students read it year after year. Today, I decided to actually look at the book and my blog entry. I still liked it, but when I took a look at the photo credits on Tarheel Reader, I found that some of the photographers had changed their usage rights, or had removed the photos. In addition, back in 2012, I knew very little about copyright laws and image use. The bottom line--I've revised the book using Photos for Class or provided a link back to the photo website (provided the photographer allows use of the photo in the first place). I'll be taking down my original book.

The book is the same pattern, but some images are changed. I also changed the font to make it more child friendly.
My favorite season! In the spirit of giving, I found a new book on Tarheel Reader and adapted it (changing out some of the pictures, adding icons, and adding a sentence frame). You can print or display it, whatever your preference is.

The book focuses on a few core words ('I', "see", "go") along with fringe vocabulary ('fall' words such as 'rake', 'acorn', and 'leaves').
Kids can add pages if there are other items that they see outside---that's just a quick extension activity idea :)

This was originally found on Tarheel Reader.
Tarheel Reader is an excellent resource for simple books with vivid pictures. These can be printed or downloaded to an ipad. I print, and edit.

Simple repetitive language is throughout the book. "I" and "see" are core words. Kids also need the fringe (in this case, 'fall' vocabulary).
I've ridden them in the US, in Indonesia, in Italy, in Spain, and in Norway. I'd love to go to Japan and ride the Bullet Train. Kids often are facinated by trains too and several I worked with were familiar (obsessed) with Thomas. Some owned myriad Thomas toys, and even when they didn't really have functional communication skills, could name all the characters instantly, putting my limited Thomas vocabulary skills to shame.
In honor of train travel, I've adapted a Tarheel Reader book I found. I changed out some of the pictures due to copyright issues, and added icons, and a sentence frame at the end. The original book is here. The link to my interactive rendition is below. I liked this book with its repetitive language, use of modifiers, and vivid pictures. If you are working on core AAC vocabulary, there are several words here along with a variety of fringe vocabulary. If you are working on kindergarten reading level, this book works for that too! The symbols are from Smarty Symbols and I pay a subscription fee which allows me to create and share materials
Long ago, my husband and I along with our two boys took a trip across the country on Amtrak.
It took a long time with many stops along the way to explore Washington DC, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Glacier National Park, and Seattle. Needless to say, we had loads of fun and an experience my boys will never forget!

That being said, I occasionally have to cook vegan, and found a perfect recipe which accomodated vegan and gluten-free diets. When there are multiple food restrictions occuring in the same meal with different people, cooking sometimes gets a little complicated! I do want to prepare a meal for a friend at times, and accomodating another's special diet is the first step to having a good time.

The recipe is for Butternut Squash Coconut Chili. I found this on a beautiful blog that looks as though it's been abandoned. I'm working on making sure my own, Chapel Hill Snippets, continues to be up and running.

I made this today, and it was delicious. Please go to the Fig Tree for the recipe.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention our state's weather disaster. Hurricane Florence devastated the eastern part of North Carolina. My community, Chapel Hill, was relatively unscathed, but I worry about all the people down east, many with flooded homes and little relief in sight as the flood waters continue to rise. The news is terrible and sad.

We did have a bit of a downpour yesterday which gave us a taste of the power of water. Our little babbling brook down in the ravine turned into a major torrent in the matter of a few hours.

Now that my little granddaughter is four, she totally loves books. I found one at our awesome library that would be great for teaching comparing/contrasting in a speech/language therapy session. It's "My Beak, Your Beak" by Melanie Walsh.

From Amazon: "<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Melanie Walsh, creator of Do Pigs Have Stripes? and Do Monkeys Tweet? shows her skill in reaching the youngest readers. Walsh shows differences between pairs of animals and then shows how they are similar.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Lions are big and have hairy manes. Kittens are small and fluffy. But . . . they both have scratchy claws!
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">There are birds and bats, sharks and goldfish, penguins and birds—who at first may seem very different, but share similarities, too. Children will love guessing on their own."

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

The author compares 5 pairs of animals, with clear illustrations, and simple language--perfect for our kids. I've created a set of visuals to go with this book, all free, just for you. You will have to find the book--it's for sale online, or you can check out your local library, which is what I did.

The visuals have clipart from Smarty Symbols for each animal, along with a sample Venn diagram and a blank Venn diagram.

This activity was originally meant for a Teachers Pay Teachers product. When I looked at how many 'core vocabulary' products were for sale on TPT, I felt the market was a bit glutted there (as in 1,470 products listed when I typed in 'core vocabulary' under speech therapy) so I switched this to free on this blog. Core vocabulary words are beautiful because children can use them in any school or daily living activity all day long. This is a simple craft to elicit a few, including the target word 'open'.

You probably all don't know my work history, but I started an awesome retirement in February 2017.
In July 2017, I then was hired on by the same school system as a part-time teacher (itinerant) for hearing impaired children. At the time, it seemed like a perfect marriage between my former career as a speech-language pathologist, and my other former career as an educator for the deaf. I was hired as the only teacher of the deaf for this district.

After beginning that new job in August, I resigned in January. Why, you may ask? After all, I was in fact very familiar with the school system, IEPs, community, and the special education field. I did have 25 years experience with this same system. What could go wrong? With me, it was a lack of anticipation.

1. I didn't anticipate the work-related anxiety. I started in August, and by September, I was having difficulty functioning at home. The 'anxiety knot' (for lack of a better term) simply wouldn't go away.
The job was part-time, two and a half days a week, but even when I would leave it on Wednesday, it wasn't until Saturday that I could function.
The picture below is a screenshot of my resting heart rate, as measured by FitBit. Basically it shows how well I've been sleeping at night. The lower the heart rate, the sounder the sleep. Even though I was only working part time, my nights were filled with worry about my students, and feelings of angst about the job. I finally decided I wasn't getting paid enough to drag the worry around with me 24 hours a day.

2. I didn't anticipate how the lack of instructional funding would affect me. North Carolina seems to expect that teachers purchase supplies out of pocket, and that was certainly true for me. I was forced to raid random bookrooms, purchase materials from Teachers Pay Teachers, submit DonorChoose grants, and otherwise beg for scraps.

3. I didn't anticipate that I wouldn't have enough time to teach the students. Too many high needs students, too little time (I was only half time), too many schools, no instructional money---all leads back to reason number 1.

4. Myriad other reasons involving serious student equity issues, my own feelings of isolation in the job, no 'guide book', low pay, low morale in the entire special education department. It was impossible to stay happy. Since I already had health insurance and other benefits with my pension, there was no incentive to stay. I hope that if any of you readers are seriously unhappy in a work setting, you feel free to explore other options.

5. New job! I'm looking forward to spending lots of time with the grandkids! Isabel was born January 10 joining her big sister Lily!

My hope is that the school administration will look at this particular position and make some changes. Bumping it to full-time would be one---as of now, the position is still vacant. With no benefits, and a half-time salary, few people will line up to even interview. Other changes would be to include the teacher in a professional learning community to reduce the feelings of isolation. Providing instructional funding would be a necessity, as well as adequate office space. Providing a mentor for a new teacher also seems vital.
Given the state of turmoil that NC education is in, changes are doubtful. I can only hope, for the children's sake.Chapel Hill Snippetshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16556275873912032352noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-139582748133952698.post-91400325937792409502018-01-18T20:02:00.003-05:002018-01-18T20:04:43.089-05:00Accountable Talk® for Everyone---Shout out to Chapel Hill Schools SLP blog with free printableMy former SLP colleagues at the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools put out a blog post from time to time. Their latest post, Accountable Talk® for Everyone, is a particulary good one. Buddy talk, Accountable Talk, small group discussions, partner work---these are all extremely challenging for language impaired children. The child may know answers, but to explain thought processes, or to think about ideas from others' perpectives and provide verbal supports for your own opinions is difficult. The author of this blog post, Sarah Smith, M.S,, CCC-SLP, has provided the readers with free visuals to aid a child duing Accountable Talk times in the classroom. These are leveled flip books--one for beginners, and one for more advanced learners.
When I read When Nana Says.... by Shannon Moore Fitzgerald, I immediately traveled back in time to when my own children were little. Ben, my son, surrounded himself with his toy cars in his bed, driving them on his pillow, naming them, and ultimately sleeping with them. My twin daughters possessed myriad beanie babies, stuffed animals, and other assorted items which covered their beds. Sometimes it was hard to find a spot for the child to lay due to the treasured toys. With all three children, after learning to read, this assortment of animals and cars was ultimately replaced by books piled around the beds---a great imagination in a young child stimulates a love for reading.
In August, after being retired from speech pathology for seven months, I took a job as a part-time deaf education teacher for my school system. I hadn't worked in the deaf education field since the early '80s, so needless to say, anxiety about the whole job thing crept in incessently day and night, and it took a while to convince myself that I actually was compentent, and could actually do good things with my little crew, ranging from age 3 to age 13 (I'm itinerant so I don't see them in one classroom--I go to four schools). Life is an adventure, but for my hearing impaired kids, it truly is adventurous, with over half being from other countries--Guatemala, Philipines, and Iran. I can't imagine the resilience it takes to being moved to another country in middle school and having to learn both American Sign Language and English, while your home and former languages were completely different. Hats off to all of them! You students have my undying admiration. I wish I could highlight them here with beautiful pictures and biographies, but my readers will only be left to imagine. They will be kept private, as they would want to be, as you and I want to be (except I do blog, so I choose not to be so private :)
So, now that I've settled into my new job, I returned to my love for augmentative communication, core vocabulary, and aided language stimulation. Here's a packet for helping students learn basic core vocabulary "LOOK" and "GO". Although most of my hearing impaired children use either speech or some form of sign language as their primary means of communication, I have a few extra special children that benefit from an emphasis on core vocabulary, with their communication augmented by symbol use.
Happy Summer everyone! High temperature in NC today is predicted to be 100, so it's time to head to Canada, which I'll be doing in 5 days. Are any of you readers from the Maritime Provinces? You'll see my husband and I cruising by, enjoying the cool weather.

Two weeks ago, I attended a DPI institute taught by some folks at the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies. It was awesome, and if you have the time, please peruse their website. There is tons of information there and invaluable links---perfect if you teach children with complex communication needs.

I'm a fan of Tarheel Reader, and learned about one author (Reed A. Booke) who has put up some books which emphasize core vocabulary and simple repetitive vocabulary. One in particular, "Like, Not Like", was all about core, so I downloaded it and changed out some of the pictures, (more for copyright purposes), and changed one word,"this", to "it" so that all of the words in the book were on the core 36 board. You can download the original book from Tarheel Reader, or download my version (link is at the bottom of this post.) Here are other useful links:

Project Core---lots of core vocabulary boards to print depending on what your student needs--I usually go with the 36 core board.

No need for velcro with this book. I would just model the words on the core boards and teach the word location on the student's devices or overlays. Here are a few screen shots:

It's easy to figure out the plot of this book, and it centers around the familiar topic of food likes and dislikes. Once you finish it, you and your students should make a classroom book of foods specific kids like and dislike. Then you could work on choice making and rejecting.
Nothing beats retirement! Except looking forward to a wonderful part time job working with some exceptional kids (see previous blog post).

Anyway, this past week, I've done some serious walking, and have come across a few delightful friends from the animal kingdom.

Two doors from our house is a beautiful piece of property where James Taylor grew up. These guys were hanging out in the James Taylor front field when I strolled by. (That property has 20 acres, mine has about 1--in case you were wondering.)

Also near our house is a beautiful set of trails owned by the North Carolina Botanical Gardens. This guy and I had a stare-down going.

My husband and I have been going back and forth to Brevard from Chapel Hill a lot lately for family reasons. We often take a break during driving. This day was in a park in Morganton, NC where we encountered a newborn fawn parked on a trail by her mama.

We left quickly. I'm sure mama and fawn were fine.

I have so enjoyed these moments, and look forward to many more.
Those of you who read my blog may remember that I retired last January after 24 years in the same elementary school.

What you may not know is that in addition to being a speech-language pathologist, I'm also a certified teacher of the hearing impaired. When a half-time position as a resource teacher for hearing impaired children popped up in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School District, I decided to try for it, altering my plans from hanging out at home, to possibly re-entering the world of IEPs, paychecks, and adorable children.

This change in course meant writing a resume, filling out an application, lining up references, and interviewing for the first time in 25 years.

To make a long story short, I got the job. As a retiree, working half-time gives me the best of both worlds. The big perk for you is that I will now have more blog posts and new materials coming! Working with kids fuels my ideas.

Stay tuned!!!!! First teacher workday is August 21st!
Here's a little background on New Voices. The mission of this group is to help children with severe communication and physical chappenges maximize their learning potential. The ultimate goal is inclusion in all aspects of life. New Voices seeks to do this through community awareness, training for professionals, family support, and increased access to assistive technology. I am personally honored to serve on the Board of Directors.
The Lara Jane Parker award was named after an outstanding young lady who graduated from UNC in spite of significant communication and mobility challenges. The award was established to provide both reward and recognition to those outstanding teachers, therapists, parents, education and health professionals and leaders who work daily to improved the lives of New Voices children. These individuals help improve their schools and their communities in ways that will allow these children to be fully included in all aspects of their daily lives. The recipients are local--Alamance, Chatham, Durham, Johnston, Orange, and Wake Counties, along the with Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.
I was in awe of these award winners, three of whom are speech-language pathologists, and one a teacher of exceptional children. My Chapel Hill--Carrboro City School colleague, Kara Van Hooser, has been using creative, and cutting edge therapy techniques for years with her severely handicapped students. Another speech-language pathologist, Caitlin Burke, recently gave voice to a student who had not had a functional communication system for the first 14 years of his life. All four of these individuals are leaders in their field and constantly strive to perfect their skills, and improve the lives of their students. Congratulations!
There is not enough space on this page to list all of her skills and accomplishments, but please look up her various projects here. The workshop was an awesome reminder why I like working with students with significant verbal challenges.
I like creating interactive books. These books are meant to not be for mere matching, but for shared reading. The interactive piece is nice for highlighting concepts, and keeping attention, but a core board should always accompany this so the adult can model comments. You can download samples of core vocabulary here.

Anyway, we just had an awesome rain shower last night in Chapel Hill, which reminded me that weather is a common topic in an elementary classroom. I created a free interactive book just for all of my internet friends struggling with finding materials with no instructional budget. Have fun!
It's only written with 50 words, many of them core vocabulary. When I don't have a clear idea of what to do (as in, I am tired, busy, overwhelmed), I can grab a book such as this, and work on myriad goals with an eager student. I'm sure all of you school SLPs have had moments where planning awesome lessons doesn't happen. Green Eggs and Ham is on my backup shelf!
This book can also be on your 'awesome lesson' shelf! To help you with this, I've created some materials to go with it. This companion pack is for your extra special learners---those students who really can't access the regular education curriculum, and need help putting words together, and understanding what literacy is all about. If you are thinking thematically, 'green' goes with St. Patrick's Day, while 'eggs' go with Easter. Green Eggs and Ham, though, is one that works anytime of the year. For the record, while I have described a companion pack here, you will need to have your own copy of the book, Green Eggs and Ham (easily found in stores and libraries).
companion for Green Eggs and Ham. This
pack meant for the more linguistically challenged students and is perfect

collaboration. This
is nice for integrating literacy and hands-on activities. You are purchasing
two interactive books, rhyming word bingo, and a food choice activity with
visuals. Icons to match to the actual book, Green
Eggs and Ham,
are also included. Clipart is by Smarty Symbols copyright 2017. AAC core
vocabulary words of ‘like’, ‘see’, ‘here’, and ‘I’ are emphasized. This is also a great packet for using
adjective + noun combinations, and for the pragmatic functions of stating
preferences.
